Justice Minister calls for suspension of Parliament website until errors rectified

Parliament, December 17 (Daily Mirror)- Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakara today called for the suspension of the Parliament website until erroneous data with regard to MPs are corrected.

The Minister told Parliament that not only his name, but details of a large number of other MPs had been erroneously uploaded in the Parliament website.

He said details in the Parliament website could be reproduced for ten years adding that the Parliament website must be maintained so that MPs are not embarrassed.

"I request the office of the Secretary General to suspend the Parliament website and rectify the errors and reopen it after rectifying the errors 100 percent," he said.

No, the web-master or data administrator has to take the responsibility. Is there a formal source document signed by the originator who is the MP in this case.

High-ranking officials in the parliamentary administration have long established direct connections with the MR clan. A family member has been actively involved in shaping a favorable public image for MR, which may have played a role in their rise to prominent positions within the administration. It is quite possible that recent events were orchestrated by these parties, motivated by their vested interests.

It is obvious that Website Staff put the titles supplied to them by MPs on the 3rd of December 2024. These titles were there on the Parliamentary Website for more than 10 days. If there were errors, MPs had plenty of time to bring errors to the notice of Website Staff and rectify them. The Cabinet spokesman and the Chief Organizer of the Government Group publicly announced that he would not take this issue over his knees. Instead, MPs waited for more than 10 days until the Speaker decided or was asked by the President to resign. MPs who had given Website Staff wrong titles had plenty of time to rectify the errors, but they did not. Now the Minister of Justice has gone to CID to look into errors.

It is very hard to believe that either the MPs did not check the Website for 10 days or any of the close friends/relatives of the MPs did not tell them that their titles given on the Website were wrong.

No it’s not obvious. Once they submit their details one would expect the details entered to be correct. They would have checked only after the Ranwala saga. Anyway, let an investigation find what happened. Your argument does not hold.

Secretary General of Parliament must take full responsibility for the website errors. I believe the Parliamentary staff was mobilised to make all these by interested parties to bring NPP into disrepute

Not only parliament website. There's a marked lack of professionalism in the IT departments of many institutions and companies. Websites are full of glaring spelling and grammar mistakes, unfriendly and confusing designs, use of computer jargon that means nothing to the average user.. Careless data-entry, no verification or proof-reading.. I could point to the IRD site as a shining example of all of the above but they are not alone. If Sri Lanka has big IT ambitions, all this will have to change and change PDQ. People will need to learn how to use the "kaduwa" properly.
