Colombo, April 27 (Daily Mirror) - Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala said investigations have been initiated into individuals arrested with a large consignment of narcotics at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake.
Speaking to the media following an event held today (27), the Minister said all individuals will be treated equally before the law, regardless of their status.
He added that the incident has already been reported to the courts and that further legal action is expected based on the outcome of ongoing investigations.
Commenting further, Minister Wijepala said authorities are proceeding with legal action in line with guidance and advice received from the Venerable Maha Sangha, while maintaining a firm commitment to upholding the rule of law.
“Since assuming office, we have consistently taken action against illegal activities without considering the social standing of those involved. Everyone is equal before the law. There is no room for one law for the weak and another for the powerful,” he said.
The Minister also highlighted the government’s ongoing nationwide drug prevention programme, noting that law enforcement authorities have intensified operations across the country.
“As part of these efforts, more than 110 kilograms of narcotics were seized at Katunayake, with several suspects, including monks, taken into custody. Investigations are currently underway, and further action will be based on the findings. Relevant facts will be presented before the courts,” he added.
