Influx of pilgrims cause heavy congestion on Nallathanniya-Sripada road

Heavy congestion has been reported along the Nallathanniya-Sripada Road due to the large number of pilgrims visiting the shrine during the long weekend, the Nallathanniya Police said.

They said that, due to the school holidays and the long weekend, a significant number of pilgrims have been visiting the shrine since last morning, leading to heavy congestion on the Nallathanniya-Sripada Road.

Currently, approximately one million pilgrims are visiting the shrine, and due to the severe congestion, they have had to wait in one place for nearly thirty minutes.

With all four Nallathanniya parking lots filled to capacity and the large number of buses carrying pilgrims continuing to arrive, many other vehicles have had to be parked along both sides of the Nallathanniya-Maskeliya Road up to Maussakelle.

There is an issue with the retaining capacity The police can’t prevent the pilgrims from coming to the sacred shrine. But authorities concerned including the police may make the pilgrims aware of the hazardous situation sometimes elderly persons and the small kids may be jostled. Thus another issue may be created with the stampede. Even the first aid groups like Red Cross and other volunteers may pay their stern attention to attend the persons who are deemed to be vulnerable

This is no longer a pilgrimage. Its now transformed into a leisure trip for 90% of those going to Sripada. Alcohol and drugs are part and parcel going by the number of detections.

Until this superstitious practice is wiped out from the minds of our foolish people, this country can not be revived Politically, Economically, or socially. The people must understand that the DEAD body or else has nothing to do with Supernatural Powers.

@QUOLP the Pulp, say the same thing to those who are going to Macca, you will have a fatwa issued against you. So cowards like you always critisize the weaker groups who will just tajw your comments and forget about it. These practices and beliefs create some kind of happiness in pilgrims minds. If these are not there then the people will behave like animals not to say that they don't behave so now but things would be much worse. So these practices are good , the issue here is that they have not created sufficient capacity to accommodate the pilgrims.

Faith and stupidity influxing too? But it does a load of good to the pot bellied if their faith forces them to make the pilgrimage once a week.
