Indefinite protest planned over proposed reforms

Colombo, January. 11 (Daily Mirror) - An activist group has announced plans to commence an indefinite protest outside the Ministry of Education on Monday, opposing proposed education reforms and demanding the resignation of the Education Minister.

The protest, organised by Adults Standing for Children, will begin at 9.00 a.m. on January 12, the group’s convener and former minister Wimal Weerawansa said.

Speaking at a press conference in Colombo on Saturday, Weerawansa said parents from across the island have been called upon to join the continuous sit-in, regardless of political affiliations.

He alleged that the proposed reforms do not provide equal opportunities for students and could undermine their future prospects.

Weerawansa further claimed the reforms are being pushed through without adequate consultation, asserting that they represent a commercial agenda rather than a genuine effort to improve the country’s education system.
