If it is unable to produce sufficient eggs to meet the demand, eggs could be imported as a temporary measure to control the escalating prices, the All Ceylon Bakery Owners' Association (ACBOA) said.
Importing eggs temporarily, would be the solitary solution to the ongoing egg crisis, and thus, an egg could be sold at Rs.30.
ACBOA chairman N.K. Jayawardena told the Daily Mirror that eggs could be imported from the neighbouring countries such as India, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
He said the current artificial shortage was created by the farmers. Once the eggs are imported, the artificial shortage and indiscriminate pricing will come down, he said.
"Most of the bakery products depend on eggs. But the situation is so pathetic that we are unable to find eggs even for Rs.70. "Therefore, failure threatens the whole industry, even during the Christmas season," he said. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
