IGP to seek Attorney General’s assistance over Mount Lavinia court incident

Colombo, Oct. 12 (Daily Mirror) - Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya said that he will seek the assistance of the Attorney General on behalf of the police officer involved in the recent incident between a police officer and a lawyer at the Mount Lavinia court premises.

The IGP said that a state councillor will also be involved to take the necessary legal action in connection with the case, which is scheduled to be taken up before the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (13).

He made these remarks to the media following a meeting held today (12) at the Hindu Cultural Hall in Trincomalee, under the patronage of the Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala. The meeting was convened to address the issues faced by police officers serving in the Trincomalee and Kantale Police Divisions.

Responding to a question from a journalist about whether the police officer would receive legal support, the IGP said that steps have been taken to ensure legal representation.

“The Police Special Investigation Unit has been entrusted with investigating whether the police acted properly and without any shortcomings in this incident. At the same time, an impartial investigation is currently underway.” the IGP said.
