Colombo, March 9 (Daily Mirror) - Health officials have warned that the prevailing hot weather conditions in the country could lead to an increase in skin problems and dehydration among children.
According to health experts, high temperatures can cause common skin conditions such as heat rashes, irritation and fungal infections, with children being more vulnerable due to their delicate skin and frequent exposure to outdoor heat.
Officials also cautioned that extreme heat increases the risk of dehydration among children, which can lead to problems such as poor sleep, fatigue and loss of appetite.
Experts said allowing children to cool down by playing with water under proper supervision can help reduce body heat during hot weather.
Meanwhile, with many schools currently holding annual sports meets, health authorities warned of the danger of heat exhaustion and heatstroke during outdoor sporting activities.
They noted that excessive sweating during sports could lead to the loss of essential body salts such as sodium and potassium, which may affect vital organs including the brain and heart.
Parents, teachers and sports organisers have been advised to ensure children drink sufficient water, take regular breaks and avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat.
Health authorities also urged parents to keep children away from direct sunlight, especially during the hottest hours of the day, and to encourage them to drink plenty of water and natural beverages to stay hydrated.
