Horana-Colombo private buses withdraw from services

Colombo, June 25 (Daily Mirror) - Private buses operating on the Horana-Colombo route number 120 have decided to withdraw from service today (25) in protest against the implementation of a new bus service from Millewa to Colombo via Horana.

The Horana-Colombo Private Bus Owners’ Association alleged that the new service was introduced by the Chairman of the Road Passenger Transport Authority without proper consultation with existing operators.

Speaking to the media, Association Chairman Janaka Gunasiri warned that if an acceptable solution is not reached, private bus operators on other routes may also join the protest in the coming days.

In response to the disruption, arrangements have been made to deploy Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) buses to accommodate stranded passengers.

Meanwhile, the Association also raised concerns over the conduct of timekeepers on the Horana-Colombo route, claiming that they are not carrying out their duties properly and are engaged in unfair financial practices. The association urged the relevant authorities to intervene and provide a fair and lasting solution to the issue.

Pathetic situation, the private bus operators are against improving the service. How can you build this country with so many people like this. Public transport should be operated by few large establishments governed by rules not by these small bus owners.

This nonsense must be stopped. Government should establish public-private transport Corporations for each province with 51% shares and ask private companies to buy shares as transport operators. Depends on the number or % of shares bus routes should be allocated. All should operate as per company rules approved by the company. Anyone violate rules will be removed by majority shareholder vote. DO IT NOW.
