Colombo, June 24 (Daily Mirror) - Grama Niladharis across the country have decided to withdraw from all field duties with effect from today (June 24), according to the Grama Niladhari Trade Union Alliance.
Speaking at a media briefing held today, the Alliance's President, Nandana Ranasinghe, said the decision was taken in response to the authorities' failure to address several longstanding demands raised by Grama Niladharis.
He warned that if their demands remain unresolved, the union would escalate its trade union action by reporting sick leave on June 30.
Among the key issues highlighted by the union is the need for an adequate fuel allowance to cover travel expenses incurred while carrying out official duties. Ranasinghe noted that Grama Niladharis have been seeking a satisfactory solution to this issue for several years.
The Trade Union Alliance also stressed that the relevant authorities should take immediate steps to provide the facilities, allowances, and resources required for Grama Niladharis to effectively perform their public service responsibilities.
