Colombo, Feb. 25 (Daily Mirror) - The government has not taken any decision to stop the construction of the proposed international cricket stadium in Jaffna, and that construction work will go ahead as planned, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Dr Nalinda Jayatissa said yesterday.
He told the weekly briefing to announce Cabinet decisions that the project will be implemented with the coordination and support of all the ministries.
"We will continue the construction work of the Jaffna International Cricket Stadium. As you all know, there are some compulsory reports to be obtained when initiating any construction work, such as the Environmental Impact Assessment Report and feasibility reports. Other than that, no decision has been taken to stop the project. We will carry out the project with the coordination and support of all the relevant ministries," he said.
Responding to a question whether the government will focus more attention on the matter that the particular area is a sanctuary and an environmentally sensitive area, the Minister said, "Definitely, we will focus attention on the environmental issue. The relevant Ministry and institutions will act regarding that."
Responding to another question whether the officials had misled the President, who said that the first match would be played within this year, the Minister said the President only stated the intention of completing the project.
The government has an idea about completing the construction of the stadium. Our intention is to complete the construction as soon as possible. The President stated the intention of completing the project.
