Colombo, March 26 (Daily Mirror)- Government vehicles which are running at a cost of Rs. 300 per kilometre can be run at a cost of 100, a research paper submitted to the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Energy and Transport has revealed.

This was revealed according to the data of a research paper prepared by the Department of Manpower and Employment on "Public Resource Management" which was presented at the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Energy and Transport recently.

The research paper revealed that according to the statistics of the year 2022, government institutions own about 82,000 vehicles, of which about 76,000 are in running condition while around 5500 vehicles are not.

According to the research, the cost of driving one kilometre of a vehicle in running condition is approximately between Rs. 300 and Rs.500 and found out that if these vehicles required by government institutions are hired from the private sector on a rent or lease basis, it is possible to run a kilometre with Rs. 100 or less amount.

“If this process is followed by removing the state-owned vehicles, about 20 billion rupees of government expenditure can be saved,” the research revealed.

Taking this information into account, the Chair of the committee Nalaka Bandara Kottegoda recommended that a sub-committee be appointed under the Chairmanship of Yadamini Gunawardena to conduct a thorough study of this research paper and submit a report to Parliament.

200% correct. But if implemented, comments will be- ministers friend is renting, state assets are being sold, state employees loose jobs etc. wouldn’t be surprising if a further study reveals that state sector has 3-4 permanent staff per vehicle (including 2 drivers)!

Set up a government fleet agency which owns and is responsible for its management and maintenance. Victoria, Australia has such and agency called VicFleet. Professionally managed by a central pool of skilled and experienced personnel which ensures fleet optimisation.

Withdrawal of Vehicles for Personal Use Wednesday, 27 March 2024 10:07 AM

If some of these vehicles are for the personal use of senior fellas, these vehicles should be withdrawn from them. Instead give them some transportation allowance. This will definitely cut down on maintenance and purchase of a new vehicle when it’s due for replacement. Many countries are practicing this policy and found it more economical.

MPS govt officials ministers travel overseas all the time why dont they do what the developed countries (which manufacture cars) do which is use public transport or own car and claim so only a few official cars are needed. Remember SL is a bankrupt country unable to pay back loans always looking for aid from other countries

    Buddhist Wednesday, 27 March 2024 03:51 PM

There should be a scheme by which, Ministers, MPs and other officials who have to use vehicles for official purposes be given an allowance. No vehicles to be provided. They have to find their own mode of transport.
