Government to make Rs. 1,437 mn budget allocation for coconut cultivation: Minister

Parliament, January 21 (Daily Mirror)- The government will allocate Rs. 1,437 million through the Budget 2025 for coconut cultivation in the northern coconut triangle, Plantation and Community Infrastructure Minister Samantha Vidyaratne said today.

He told Parliament that the government has planned to cultivate coconut trees in 40,000 hectares in the northen province and that Rs. 1,437 million has been requested to be allocated from the 2025 budget.

The Minister said while responding to a question by MP Ajith Gihan that the government has decided to provide free fertiliser for coconut cultivations less than five hectares in the country.

He also said a decision has been taken to allocate 27,500 metric tonnes of the stock of 55,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser recieved from Russia for coconut cultivation.

Agricultural land should be designated land and solely used for activities like growing crops or rearing livestock. Until the government does this, people are going to sell good agricultural land to land-sales.

Each house owner should plant a coconut sapling or more in each garden as per the space available. Government cannot do it alone. Declare a coconut planting month.

As coconut farmers, we have not seen any price reduction in coconut fertilizer YPM or APM. APM sells at Rs,9500 per 50Kg bag. During RW's time (September 2024) we were told by by coconut cultivation Board field officers that we will get YPM @ Rs. 6500 per 50kg bag. Nothing came out of it, only the monsoon did eventually and we lost our fertilizing slot. Russian Fertilizer story has been going around for over a month, but nothing came out of it too. Too many inefficient people in our administrative system.
