Government to amend Employees’ Provident Fund Bill

Colombo, Nov 1. (Daily Mirror) - The government is to amend the Employees' Provident Fund(EPF) Bill, a statement from the Labour Ministry said.

The amendment will focus on providing more benefits to workers and simplify the surcharge mechanism so that surcharges could be collected faster from the employers.

Government, Could you please also have a stringent monitoring of all businesses in Pettah, Armour Street, Hulfsdorf, Kotahena and all busy crowded areas to ensure employee rights are protected, no child labour, salaries and EPF contributions are made regularly and no exploitation of workers.

I honestly think it’s time to dissolve this organisation and end long standing government monopoly over retirement savings of Sri Lankans. Current model is not ideal and open to mismanagement and corruption. Currently Provident fund’s role more of a creditor that provides bond loans to the government than a retirement fund. Investment options are limited and returns are low. Its time for private sector to take over retirement funds under tight supervision of a government regulator. Not only it will open up more investment options for people, pump money into the share market, fund large infrastructure projects in sri lanka also give Sri Lankans an opportunity to invest in developed countries to maximise their retirement savings..
