Colombo (Daily Mirror) - With a significant uptick in dengue cases coinciding with the advent of the rainy season, the attention of the government has been drawn towards immediate steps to mitigate the situation.

Sagala Ratnayaka, Senior Advisor to the President on National Security and Chief of Presidential Staff, has called for urgent measures to address the escalating situation. This directive came during a crucial meeting at the Presidential Secretariat on the 5th of this month, presided over by State Minister of Health Dr. Sita Arambepola and Chief of Presidential Staff Sagala Ratnayaka.

The discussions primarily focused on the rising number of dengue cases in the Colombo, Gampaha, Kandy, and Jaffna districts. Alarming reports revealed the presence of dengue vectors breeding in public spaces, including government institutions, boat yards, and schools.

Sagala Ratnayaka issued a series of directives to the National Dengue Control Unit to address these concerns. Notably, he instructed the Sri Lanka Police, with the support of the armed forces, to take immediate action to control the situation. The Presidential Secretariat is gearing up to dispatch letters to various government agencies, outlining urgent measures to curb the spread of the disease.

Furthermore, in a bid to enhance public awareness, Ratnayaka proposed a collaborative effort between the Sri Lanka Police and the offices of the Medical Officers of Health to implement a comprehensive nationwide awareness program.

To assess the progress of these initiatives, a follow-up meeting with the dengue control unit is scheduled for next Monday. The government remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of the public in the face of this dengue outbreak.

  • Health Authorities Not Proactively Addressing Dengue Wednesday, 06 December 2023 03:21 PM

Dengue is a on going issue for many years. Why isn’t the health authorities in charge of this issue proactive? Don’t need to wait for top officials to remind or conduct meetings once it’s in a dire situation!

Think about it Wednesday, 06 December 2023 03:34 PM

Everyone wants more doctors and more medical schools . But when it comes to complicated diseases and infections , Doctors don’t come out and explain why the problem is not being sorted out. Doctors either come out and say “ we will solve the problem immediately “ or say “ we have no scientific knowledge to successfully to cure the problem”. The politicians don’t have to worry , it is doctors’s problem. If doctors can’t have answers then it is CRAZY we keep producing more and more doctors.

Every year this dengu topic comes up and go but no solution or remedies. Just meeting and discussing no long term plan. Just taking action for one day it is not going to solve the problem, first draw a long term plan and execute stringently. Make law and order, make fines for breaching it. People engaged in this task should produce results in a time frame.

This is a public problem. Eradicate mosquito breeding places. Educate the public about stagnant water in the corner of a pond, stagnant drains, water trapped in garden utensils, coconut shells.

How can you control it when the measures put in place are to fumigate the surrounding areas of dengue patients and the officials coming to do the job demand Rs 1000/- to carry out what is supposed to be done free… this is happening in the boralasgamuwa UC.
