Colombo, April 25 (Daily Mirror) - Claiming that the government has undertaken significant work to ensure transport safety, Minister of Transport and Highways Bimal Rathnayake said today that the government is planning to significantly reduce the number of deaths caused due to road accidents by the year 2029.
The Minister said the government has taken numerous steps to gradually reduce more than 2,700 deaths caused annually due to road accidents.
The Minister expressed these views while participating in a special one-day workshop organised by the National Transport Medical Institute (NTMI) on "Principles and Practice of Random Drug Testing" under the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development to raise awareness among officials at the institutional level.
"The government has undertaken significant work to ensure transport safety. Regardless of how much we develop roads, import modern vehicles or improve infrastructure, road safety is compromised without proper training and discipline. We have taken numerous steps to gradually reduce the loss of over 2,700 lives annually due to road accidents. Our goal is to significantly reduce the number of deaths by the year 2029," he said.
He said that according to available data, between 15% and 18% of drivers use drugs and that driver-related issues account for approximately 53% of road accidents.
"Transport safety cannot be established without discipline and training. As a government, we are taking steps to ensure safety as per the Transport Action Plan. Passenger safety has been made the number one priority. We have moved beyond mere ideas to concrete actions. We are importing standardised buses and vehicles suited to the country," he said.
