Gems valued at Rs.291 Million seized at BIA

A woman who attempted to smuggle out of the country, a stock of gems valued Rs.291 million was arrested at Katunayake International Airport earlier today.

Media Spokesman for the Customs Seevali Arukkgoda said the 30 year old suspect woman was from Orugodawatta and that she was arrested when she called over at the airport to fly to Chennai by Indian Airline flight No.274 leaving at 3.13am.

He said the stock of contraband weighing 02.311 kilos had been concealed in her dress and that the security officers had arrested and handed her over to the Customs for further investigations.

She was under further interrogation by the Custom officers.(T.K.G.Kapila)

Where did she get these stock of gems ? Sri Lankans are very rich. However to the world it shows as poor with starving people. All rubbish.

What are you on about, don't talk about things you don't know, people are starving, politicians and associates have robbed sl blind, gems can be found in many places in sl but the controls are ridiculous, you find gems, they get confiscated unless you have a license, even if you find something on the ground on your property, corrupt officials find ways to seize it, only politically associated people get licenses to mine for gems, politicians steal everything, I know a family who have no income, no job prospects, too old to do the work available in their village area, there are gems all around them, but selling them can land you in trouble
