GMOA announces fresh islandwide token strike

Colombo, April 1 (Daily Mirror) - The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has announced a fresh islandwide one-day token strike scheduled for April 2, citing the authorities’ failure to address alleged irregularities in the medical transfer process.

The GMOA stated that it had earlier carried out a similar one-day token strike on March 31, protesting what it described as politically influenced decisions in post-intern placements and transfers to difficult service areas.

The strike concluded as planned at 8.00 a.m. today, after which the association convened an emergency executive committee meeting to assess the situation.

Following the meeting, the GMOA expressed concern over what it termed continued arbitrary actions and irregularities in the transfer process.

The association alleged that these decisions were being made through political interference, in violation of established procedures.

Are they living with any conscience? The poorer sector heavily depend on govt hospitals for their health needs. First of all, these doctors, it's a shame to call them so, must be stopped making millions working at private hospitals. Then they'll learn.

Most selfish group in Sri Lanka. These can never work in a country like Canada..where doctors and nurses have to work like he'll. Where ordinary cotton pants and cotton shirts.. and regular walking shoes. Work long hours. I never heard stikes. Of course they are well paid. The private clinics cannot charge as they please. They have to bill the government with standard amounts. Patients give the health card. NPP government please bring such a system and ask all doctors to pay back tuition fees. No need to give them free higher education.

Whether Good or bad JR fired over 100,000 striking workers back in 1980 July. Now he didn't care about the backlash or consequences he did the right thing. JR comes from a high class high esteem family. Unlike the gam Battan. Take action against GMOA members and CEB engineers or anyone resorting to strike action or threatening to strike. For God sake you have 2/3rds majority. Nowadays political leaders lack political acumen and political will. They came to power coz they were at the right place at the right time. And the voters didn't have a alternate choice.

Such realities appear to be of limited concern, as many members readily utilise these interruptions to pursue private practice. The frequent recourse to strikes and work-to-rule campaigns has become disturbingly routine, fostering the perception of an organisation operating with undue coercive influence. In doing so, the association risks eroding the respect and trust it once commanded.

We are waiting to see how government ia handling this crisis. We will see if this is a Punnyasoma governance or Lee kwan style super leadership. This is what happens if you give too much freebies to bunch of utterly selfish citizens. We were at hospital when this strike was suddenly announced, we noticed some BMW driven doctors were fleeing as an ambulance out of kalubowila hospital. And as we enter our consultant room at our given time, all A/Cs , lights were on without any doctors in their rooms. What a way to save public money. Specially in a crisis like this. These doctors are not just selfish, also First class public Money wasters in this country.

Transfer irregularities should be solved through discussion or legal means. GMOA or any other unions should not have any say in transfer or any other administrative matters. Union strikes should be at the expense of salaries.
