Colombo, April 1 (Daily Mirror) - The recent decision regarding fuel allowances for Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Members of Parliament and senior government officials does not constitute an increase in benefits, Deputy Minister Arun Hemachandra clarified.
In a statement shared on social media, the Deputy Minister explained that fuel allowances are typically calculated based on market fuel prices prevailing on the 1st of each month. However, the latest Cabinet approval has fixed the March 1, 2026, fuel price as the benchmark for calculating allowances for April.
He noted that fuel prices were revised twice during March, and as a result, although the monetary value of the allowance remains unchanged, the actual quantity of fuel that can be purchased has decreased.
“This is not an increase in the allowance. Rather, the allowance is not being adjusted to reflect current prices, which effectively reduces the fuel entitlement,” Hemachandra said.
