Frost and heavy rains hit tea and vegetable crops in Nuwara Eliya

The sudden shift from cold evenings and intense sunlight in the mornings and at sun set known as burning or the magnifying glass effect leads to leaf blister or scorching and is harsh on young tea plants and tender buds of older trees, During these conditions the tea plant is deprived of its photosynthetic inhibition which is an important process which can harm the leaf tissue. The effective solution in Sri Lanka is watering the frosted plants before sun set, I have seen wind breakers being used and this helps too, the errors we make and influence blister are that we sometimes mis calculate the pruning schedule pruning when the colder temperature is about to set in or spraying nitrogen fertilizers instead of potassium which tolerates the low temperatures.
