Colombo, Dec. 24 (Daily Mirror) - Referring to media reports that he had sought the help of Acting IGP Deshabandu Tennekoon after allegedly knocking down a person while driving his vehicle, member of communication unit Archdiocese of Colombo Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando today said he had not asked for assistance from any senior police officer to obtain bail.

"I didn't ask for help from any person. Did not call Mr. Deshbandu Thennakoon regarding this matter. " Reports which said I thanked Mr. Deshbandu Thennakoon is also a lie. I have never talked to Mr. Deshbandu Thennakoon on the phone," Fr. Fernando said in his Facebook Post.

"The media reported a statement made by the police that "Father Cyril Gamini obtained bail after calling the Patriots" The car I was driving collided with a motorbike. After admitting the injured man to the Colombo National Hospital, I went to the Kotahena Police station and made a statement. My car was taken over by the police. The traffic department in charge of Kothena police refused to grant bail. I was detained at the Kotahena police until the next day. President's Counsel Mr. Shamil Perera was also with us. We were ready to go to court the next morning. Many of my friends have called me on the phone but I told all of them it is not necessary to do anything beyond the law. That morning, Kothena police OIC said we could come to an agreement with the injured party. Accordingly, the losses were compensated. The parties concerned signed a legal agreement. I am aware that Cardinal did not ask for help from anyone to get myself cleared. He came to know about this after the matter ended," he said in his post.

Maybe not a politician. But like his Cardinal, he is also heavily involved in politics. In the past, the church never got involved in politics.

Definition of a gentleman does not fit this person.

Everyone knew this is just a political stunt to justify that the acting IGP post was right. The Bishops Palace was very critical of this person being appointed the IGP along with a majority of movements, civilians and even politicians. But they are just trying to white wash a convicted person to this post. How ever what can this minister say as he too is a person who bribed the LTTE at that time, which he himself admitted. I think they should be sued for this balant lie.

There is nothing wrong in asking for help. Everyone contacts any known person to get anything done in public and private sector. You cannot get anything done without knowing anyone. So , contacting IGP is fine in this case, it is part of the culture now.

Lame excuses as politicians do.Did he deny the accident?

    Bandu Sunday, 24 December 2023 11:43 PM

Beg your pardon. Fr Cyril says in above article: The car I was driving collided with a motorbike. He admitted the accident surely.

    Gayan Sunday, 24 December 2023 11:30 PM

One fella hit the lampost and gave a similar excuse.

    Keran Sunday, 24 December 2023 11:31 PM

These are false stories created by politionsins and high government officials of the pottuwa government. Not to worry about this low type of fellows. Tyran alas is capable of dealing with LTTE and do all sorts of damage to the country.

These are caused to be planted by the politicians who are opposed the Fr Gamini particularly about the noise he makes about Easter attack

Tissa, this the type of culture that should be changed and not encouraged. The law must take it's course.

    Sathya Monday, 25 December 2023 07:42 AM

They break the law and then seek police help to bail them out

    Onlooker Monday, 25 December 2023 11:19 AM

And who is they in this instance who broke the law?? Not Fr Cyril as he did everything right by taking injured to hospital and reporting to the Police. The last para says it all.

Mohamed Burhan Monday, 25 December 2023 09:01 PM

Please dont sling mud for this well respected religious person. If he has caused an accident he will follow traffic laws and compensate the victim which he would have done.Such a nice person thousands of people are their and many influential people would have called him to immediately bail him out.
