Flood warning issued for low-lying areas along Deduru Oya

Colombo, Oct. 20 (Daily Mirror) - The Irrigation Department has warned of a possible flood situation in several low-lying areas along the Deduru Oya valley, following considerable rainfall in the upper and middle catchment areas as of 5.00 a.m. today.

According to the department, the Deduru Oya reservoir is currently spilling at a rate of 16,250 cubic feet per second.

Based on current water levels recorded at hydrological stations, officials caution that areas in the Wariyapola, Nikaweratiya, Mahawa, Kobeigane, Bingiriya, Pallama, Chilaw, Arachchikattuwa, and Rasnayakapura Divisional Secretariat Divisions are at risk of flooding.

As such, residents and motorists using roads that run through floodplains of Deduru Oya have been advised to remain vigilant, as inundation of off-roads is highly likely.
