First-ever brown sugar retail network launched in Nugegoda

Colombo, Nov. 11 (Daily Mirror) - The Lanka Sugar Company, operating under the Ministry of Industries and Enterprise Development, today (Nov. 11) inaugurated its first-ever brown sugar retail network in Nugegoda.

The initiative aims to provide high-quality brown sugar from the Pelwatte and Sevanagala factories at affordable prices, marking the company’s first retail network launch in 14 years since coming under state ownership in 2011.

The move also seeks to clarify recent misinformation suggesting that the Pelwatte and Sevanagala factories were facing closure or privatization.

Minister Sunil Handunnetti hailed the launch as a “turning point” for Lanka Sugar, adding that from January 1, the government will exempt the company from statutory payments to strengthen its operations.

The retail network is expected to benefit over 250,000 sugarcane farming families, providing a stable market for their produce and reinforcing the government’s support for the local sugar industry.

This step not only expands Lanka Sugar’s reach to consumers but also signals a renewed commitment to local production and farmer livelihoods.
