Firearm permits for crop protection to be issued: State Defence Minister

The existing laws for the use of firearms for crop protection purposes have been amended, State Minister of Defence Premitha Bandara Tennakoon said.

Accordingly, it has been decided to revise the extent of the agricultural land area to five (05) acres for the issue of these permits.

The State Minister said the decision was taken as a matter of urgency since large amounts of crops are being destroyed annually by various wild animals.

Minister Tennakoon further said the government is working on diverse programmes to promote and strengthen the agricultural economy and food security in the country.

He said details on the use of firearms for crop protection activities can be obtained from the respective District Secretariats.

Can any so called budhist MP aprove this? after all this is the country representing the Lord Budha's sublime doctrine, of nonviolence. There should be a nonviolent scientific method to control animal population, like animal sterilization, and proper mechanism to collect statistics of animal population and control.

Oh please! Trying any scientific methods will also have the same reaction from people like you, relocating, sterilize, whatever. Either you and we starve or they all thrive! Like I have commented before! Animals (including humans) should live in harmony and in manageable numbers! BTW food shortage for humans is also due to overpopulation. Again the ‘humane way’ will not be acceptable to you!

Government should not allow for firearms into civilian hands, without updating the Constitution. Only the military should be culling excess wild animals. Some of the excess could be exported instead the religious and environmental groups would rather see the animals poisoned and shot.
