Fire erupts at Karadiyana garbage dump; Residents advised to wear face masks

Colombo, April 10 (Daily Mirror) - A sudden fire broke out this evening at the Karadiyana waste management site in Piliyandala. Police said the blaze has sent thick plumes of smoke across the area.

The Moratuwa Fire Service Department, the Sri Lanka Air Force Firefighting Unit, and the Piliyandala Police are currently engaged in a joint operation to douse the flames. Emergency teams are working to contain the spread, though heavy smoke continues to blanket the surrounding neighborhoods.

Police have warned that the smoke emitted from the site may contain toxic substances. Consequently, the public is strongly advised to avoid using the bypass roads in the immediate vicinity of the garbage dump and to seek alternative routes to reach their destinations.

The Piliyandala Police have also issued a health advisory for residents living near the site, urging them to wear face masks to prevent respiratory complications from inhaling the smoke.
