The Finance Ministry has taken measures to remove the import restrictions on all currently restricted items, except on private vehicles, from October 1, Finance State Minister Shehan Semasinghe said.

He said the decision was taken since priority should be given to essential items other than the imports of private vehicles.

The import of private vehicles can be considered after increasing the foreign exchange after the debt restructuring process is complete and the government revenue increases, he added.

"After relaxing the import restrictions on all currently restricted items, we do not think anyone will request the government to relax the private vehicle import restrictions," he said.

"If we relax all import restrictions, it will be another disaster for the economy, the State Minister said. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

There is absolutely no urgency to lift import on vehicles. We have more than adequate vehicles in the country at the moment. The inventory vehicles awaiting resale is huge. Restrictions could be in place for another four to five years, if there is free supply of spare parts and accessories. In fact it will facilitate a good mental adjustment for our people who were crazy on getting new cars and even disposing of immovable property to fund same. People looking to sell their duty free permits as a side business would not welcome it. Perhaps the duty free permit concession should be done away with while the import ban is in place.

It's better to remove restrictions only for essential items and others on item wise basis only. Otherwise again whole country will be a low grade plastic and low quality items dumping yard.

Many will import expensive SUVs under company names stating that those are required for the business. Then those will slip into the market. Either you guys do not have any brain to anticipate how frauds take place or you purposely allow fraudsters to take advantage of few loop holes . I think the second scenario is

@shanka Your point is well taken. However our leaders are not going to listen to you or me. They do what pleases them but not for the country or people like us.
