Excise duty on imported potatoes increased

The Government has decided to increase the excise duty on imported potatoes to Rs. 50.00 per kilo from midnight tonight (26), the presidential media division said.

They said the decision was taken due to the huge harvest expected season in Nuwara-Eliya this season. (CS)

In spite of the Rs.50 tax increase, the imported potato will cost less compared to the locally grown. Growers will not have access to imported chemical fertilizers in the future, good news, in order to maintain a level playing field, can we stop importing food grown using chemical fertilizers?
