Ella-Wellawaya Road closure extended due to wet weather

The opening of the Ella-Wellawaya Road would be further delayed if wet weather continued in the coming days, Moneragala Disaster Management Center’s Assistant Director Raveendra Kumara said today.

The Wellawaya Police has closed the road for traffic from the Wellawaya Town towards Ella.

Raveendra Kumara said a spot check was carried out jointly by the Disaster Management Center, Army Personnel and the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) and had cleared the road of earth and boulders fallen and also removed dangerous boulders.

Badulla DMC also cautioned the people of possible earth-slips and said the frequent falling of boulders has made it difficult to clear the road.

The Ella-Wellawaya Road was closed late last week following earth slips and falling boulders in certain places.(Nayanajeewa Bandara and Prasad Rukmal)
