Eheliyagoda Police OIC found dead with gunshot injuries

The Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Eheliyagoda Police station, Priyanka Silva, was found dead with gunshot injuries inside his quarters.

Police have initiated an investigation to establish whether this incident was a result of suicide or murder.

The deceased has been identified as a resident of Wadduwa.

The OIC is a very important position , almost personally in charge of the protection and also eliminating the fear of crime of thousands of households and visitors in a district. Leaving this level of responsibility to a poorly educated single person in the rank of a Sub Inspector or an Inspector is ludicrous. A suitable candidate for an OIC has to be a well balanced proper university graduate ( not via an internet education ) and possibly holding the rank of an ASP. Gradually the police force should move to an all graduate profession, that is the only way to increase it’s effectiveness and eliminate the corruption ,violence, and extrajudicial killings which are endemic within the present day Police.

Sri Lankan Graduates means nothing. We need people in the police force that are law abiding citizens themselves, strength of character that cannot be bent by corrupt politicians or other gangsters, implement the law by the book, and be ready to arrest and enforce the law any criminal, politicians or not, that break the law. But first of all, it is no good having the best people with integrity in the force if the IGP is corrupt and do the bidding of politicians and interfere with the due process, intimidate or transfer honest policemen doing their work under pressure from those corrupt MPs and Ministers. Nothing will get better in Sri Lanka until we have an honest and law abiding President, PM and cabinet members. We do not want graduates to be the only one suitable for these posts. We need people of integrity.

As long as IGP is a politicians appointment, there will be no law and order in this country. IGP position should be earned with experience and records, not appointed, where they will not regarded the value of that position. Also police department should be independent and only answerable to public and the court.

@roobarbie- were you living under a rock for all these years not realising that we have been hiring O/L and A/L educated men and women with excellent character references from their school principals to our police force all along and yet the police force continues to remain incompetent and corrupt to the core. We have had this “experiment “ since independence in 1948 and it has not worked.So the suggestion by @Jaffna Logic, to make the force 100% university educated makes lot of sense. A university education which I am certain you never experienced is different from school education. It instils “ self confidence , independence of thought, and common sense “ in equal measure. Of course not every university graduate come out as expected but the majority does.

We don’t know the reason behind his suicide but in some countries there were leaders and officials suicided, when they cannot performed their duty diligently but here we have set of senior police officers who behaved like Montessori kids, without reacting to intelligence reports which has been receiving during period of couple of months till nearly 300 people massacred, we feel it’s good if all of them resign their own,they are such impotent inefficient fellows
