E-motoring system likely by end of this year: Bandula

The government is to launch the proposed e-motoring system by the end of this year after overcoming various issues, Cabinet spokesman and Transport and Highways Minister Bandula Gunawardana said.

Addressing the media today, he said the final decision to implement the e-motoring system has been reached.

Even though Cabinet approval has been granted, it will take more time to launch the system as it needs to receive reports from various professional committees.

"We had to rent a building for this purpose near the Gangaramaya in Colombo. That building should be assessed by government assessors. We believe we need to complete the office structure for the system," he said.

"However hard we work, the existing procurement and other processes are very time-consuming. If we evade these procedures, we will be blamed, claiming that the programme was not run according to procedures.

"However, as a solution to simplify vehicle registrations and minimize corruption and fraudulent activities, the e-motoring system will come into effect by the end of this year," Minister Gunawardana said. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
