Digital spot fines for traffic offences launched in Southern Province via GovPay platform

Colombo, Oct. 20 (Daily Mirror) - Spot fining for traffic offences in the Southern Province will be implemented through the GovPay digital payment platform starting today, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) W.P.J. Senadeera said.

Speaking at a media briefing, DIG Senadeera said that nearly three-quarters of the initial technical issues encountered with the online GovPay system have now been resolved.

Motorists can now pay fines for 33 traffic offences directly through the GovPay platform, eliminating the need to visit post offices and saving time.

DIG Senadeera explained that the pilot programme was first launched on April 8 this year, covering 14 police stations from Kurunegala to Anuradhapura. Initially, only 40 mobile phones were provided to traffic police officers for the implementation.

The second phase expanded the programme to the Western Province and the expressway network, deploying 1,000 mobile phones - 935 in the Western Province and 65 for expressway traffic police.

He added that the next phase will extend the system to the Northern Province and other regions simultaneously, with nationwide implementation expected by the end of this year.

DIG Senadeera highlighted that the digital payment system is not intended to encourage traffic violations but to modernize enforcement and improve efficiency.

He further revealed that a demerit points system will soon be integrated into GovPay, warning motorists that repeated offences could lead to licence suspension or cancellation.
