Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Dr. Prasanna Gunasena agreed to pay a fine for speeding despite officers on duty offering to release the vehicle without imposing it, an informed source said.
The incident occurred on the Meerigama-Kurunegala stretch of the expressway when the Deputy Minister’s driver was caught for high speeding.
Dr. Gunasena, who was on board at the time, insisted on paying the fine, stating that all citizens must adhere to the country’s laws, the source added.

Mr minister if you were present in the speeding vehicle YOU should have told the driver TO ADHERE TO THE SPEED LIMIT! You are trying to act tortuous only cos your vehicle got caught

At least appreciate what he has done thinking the culture among ruling politicians which prevailed in the country before. When driving in highway it usually happen unless you keep on looking at the speed meter.

Sokrates Sunday, 29 December 2024 08:00 AM
What rubbish are you talking? I always sit in the back when I'm being driven. The last thing I do is strain my neck to have a look at the speedometer. My driver is solely responsible for complying with the traffic rules and he has to bear the consequences if he breaks them. If something like this happened more often, I would sack him. In the meantime, all vehicles in the EU have to give an annoying warning signal that cannot be switched off if the permitted speed is exceeded. This is communicated to the vehicle electronically.

Hey Sokrates, If the passenger named here isn't smart enough to understand and recognize the difference between the legal speed and over the limit speed, he isn't suitable to be a part of the parliament. He is an idiot ! I would have asked my driver to get down right there and driven the vehicle myself. That is the right thing to do. These idiots are getting elected to make and adhere to laws and end up breaking the very laws they are committed to protect. Slowly everything is turning out to be another circus and a cesspit.

PASSENGERS WHEN TRAVELLING IN A VEHICLE DO NOT FIX THEIR EYES ON THE SPEEDO METER, THEY RELY ON THE DRIVER AND OR WHOEVER IS DRIVING TO GET THEM FROM A TO B SAFELY, BUT NO ONE IS PERFECT AT TIMES SIGN Sunday, 29 December 2024 05:29 PM
MM, WHAT A STUPID COMMENT!!. TKS TO LION AND SOKRATES WHO GAVE EXCELLENT RESPONSES TO YOUR COMMENT. SO THERE IS NO NEED FOR ME TO ADD TO IT. I AM SURE SOME OF THE PREVIOUS POLITICIANS WOULD HAVE BEEN STOPPED FOR SPEEDING AND OR DRINK DRIVING, DO YOU THINK THEY WOULD HAVE PAID ANY FINES IRRESPECTIVE OF WHETHER THE DRIVER AND OR POLITICIAN WAS IN THE DRIVERS SEAT.

Consequences Of Losing Control Of A Vehicle Must Be Highlighted Regularly Saturday, 28 December 2024 04:30 PM
Paying the fine is one thing! Why wasn’t the driver alerted not to speed? Either the Minister or the Minister’s Security officer could have reminded the driver on the consequences of speeding and losing control of the vehicle. Like a “missile”, Either crashing into someone, damaging their’s or someone else’s vehicle, both private and public properties is the consequences of irresponsible driving. Many people and families have and still are suffering from accidents due to speeding. All heads of government agencies should remind their drivers regularly on the consequences of speeding and should set an example from now on. Forget about past regimes driving behaviours as SL has turned a new leaf.

Purposely driven at high speed to get caught and to make a media statement about paying the fine. Cheap tactics to gain attention. Instead of this, please work on initiatives to improve driver's behaviour in the country where most drivers has a mad mentality about driving.

Politician abused the police man later he got his thugs to burned the vehicle belonging to the police man. That was the fury of these thugs who ruled this country

BEFORE SPEEDING DR. PRASANNA AND DRIVER MUST KNOW THE SPEED OF THE ROAD. IF TRAFFIC POLICE NOT NOTICED COME OR GO SPEED ONLY. IF KNEW THE , YOU MUST STUDY THE ROAD REGULATIONS TOO.

Perhaps a staged drama to show that the NPP MPs are not above the law. Instead, the Deputy Minister should have warned the driver not to exceed the speed limit if the NPP guys law abiding" citizens!

It is good to accept responsibility and pay the fine. What is more important is to make sure your driver drives within the speed limit and drives safely.

On the other hand, a deputy minister in Rajapakse government set the police car on fire after getting a ticket on the southern Expressway. Later the Rajapakse government charged the police officer with an offense allegedly committed committed 5 years prior. Hope the present government ask the deputy minister (he is from Matara) and MR about this

THE OFFICERS WHO WERE PRESENT AT THIS INCIDENT SHOULD BE WARNED THAT A REPETITION OF RELEASING VEHICLES WITHOUT ISSUING FINE NOTICES IS NOT ACCEPTABLE AND NO EXCUSES WILL BE ACCEPTED Saturday, 28 December 2024 08:06 PM
HATS OFF TO THE MINISTER FOR REFUSING TO ACCEPT THE RELEASE OF HIS VEHICLE WITH NO FINE. AN EXAMPLE TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE NEW GOVT TO STICK TO THE RULES FOLLOWED BY ALL, AS THEY SAY "HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY" AND THIS MINISTER HAS CLEARLY PROVED THAT HE IS A HONEST POLITICAN WHO HAS COME TO SERVE THE COUNTRY AND ITS PEOPLE. WELL DONE, MAY THE LORD GUIDE AND PROTECT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.

The traffic cop should be charged for violating the law and the minister's readiness to pay the fine is tantamount to a bribe

Last summer in Alberta Canada the finance minister and Deputy PM Chrystia Freeland was given a speeding ticket for going at 132 kmh on a 110 kmh highway. Ironic part she's driving her own car and going to her home province to assess the wildfire damages. Am pretty sure she would've mentioned who she is to police officer. Incidentally she's the second in-command in the country.2 days later she apologized to the public. Am pretty sure the police officer would've reminded her nothing worth than her life and to go slow, take it easy. yeah.

Who was behind the wheel. The minister or someone else. I am sure that the law says that the driver should pay the fine. If some one else is paying the fine on behalf of the driver then I reckon that something is not right here and the minister is doing this for cheap publicity.

Sue Kirthisinghe Sunday, 29 December 2024 11:29 AM
Why did the police agree to let him go without fining him? Shouldn't the police be questioned as to why there are different laws for different people? Of course the Minister had to pay because before long, it would have been public knowledge with another red mark notched against the Govt. This is what is called grand standing to fool the public.
