Defrauding a Sri Lankan living in Australia of Australian $ 180,500: Convicted lawyer released on bail



A lawyer, who has been jailed for 3 years by the High Court of Colombo, was granted bail pending appeal by the Appeal Courts.

The lawyer, Manoj Bimsara Dissanayake, was sentenced to three years by Colombo High Court in 2018 for defrauding a Sri Lankan living in Australia of 180,500 Australian Dollars.

The Court of Appeal two-judge-bench comprising Justice Menaka Wijesundera and Justice Neil Iddawala decided to enlarge the lawyer on bail pending appeal, on a cash bail of Rs. 100,000 with two sureties of Rs. 500,000.

The accused was ordered to report to the relevant police station every 4th Sunday of each month.

He was further ordered to surrender his passport to the relevant High Court. Counsel appeared for the Attorney General informed the Court of Appeal that they have no objection to the accused being enlarged on bail.

The lawyer, Manoj Bimsara Dissanayake, was sentenced to three years by High Court on January 18, 2018. Apart from the imprisonment, the accused was ordered to pay Rs. 500,000 fine. He was further ordered to pay Rs.9 million compensation to the victim.

Filing indictments in Colombo High Court, the Attorney General alleged that the accused had misappropriated 180,500 Australian Dollars from a Sri Lankan living in Australia after he transferred the sum to a bank account belonging to the accused to construct a hotel in Kurunegala.
