Colombo, July 07 (Daily Mirror) - The 21-year-old daughter of Dr. Maheshi Surasinghe Wijerathna, a consultant neurosurgeon attached to Sri Jayawardenapura General Hospital, has been arrested by the Keselwatta Police.

Police said she was taken into custody for allegedly threatening an official of the Bribery Commission. She is to be produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.

Earlier, the Colombo Magistrate’s Court remanded Dr. Wijerathna and two others over allegations of selling medicines at inflated prices through a third party.

This is a very serious offence. If it is true, then it is equal to threatening the justice system of this country. Maximum sentence needs to be given without regret so that all citizens understand that no more can they get their way through thuggery, threatening and criminality specially to Officials who are their to protect.

In spite of the Health Ministry announcing that there is no violation to purchase drugs outside the Medical Supplies Division and it is the choice of the patients. This is a normal happening in every hospital where patients prefer to buy quality drugs irrespective of price as some of the drugs imported from an Asian country are not of quality and not effective. So there is no issue unless there are interested parties having an axe to grind with this Surgeon. In these circumstances the offspring who is still young not knowing the consequences of the alleged threat through frustration of bail not granted to her mother. From this standpoint certain allowance should be considered in this utterance unlike threats given by a hardcore criminal!!!!!!!

Remember this is inside the Court premises. It is a very serious offence. A person in this situation will normally be given at least 2 years in prison. It is such a grave offence !! Lawers should give proper advice and not ruin a young person who has done this without thinking of the repercussions.
