Dambulla eatery fined Rs. 510,000 for selling expired water

Colombo, April 29 (Daily Mirror) - A restaurant in Dambulla has been fined Rs. 510,000 by the Dambulla Magistrate’s Court for selling expired bottled water above the maximum retail price.

The fine was imposed today (April 29, 2026) following a raid carried out by the Matale District Office of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA).

Investigations revealed that the establishment had sold bottled water with a maximum retail price (MRP) of Rs. 80 at Rs. 120. The bottles had also expired on March 15, 2026.

Officials reiterated that selling expired food or beverages and charging above the marked price are violations of consumer protection laws.
