Colombo, April 29 (Daily Mirror) - In a major development that confirms Daily Mirror’s continuous and exclusive reporting, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) President Shammi Silva and the SLC Executive Committee have decided to step down following a special committee meeting held yesterday (28), bringing an end to days of speculation and controversy surrounding the cricket administration.
The resignation comes in the wake of a series of exclusive reports by the Daily Mirror, which was the first to reveal that Silva was on his way out.
As early as April 22, the newspaper reported that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had intervened and instructed Silva to step down amid criticism over governance issues within SLC. That initial report set the stage for what would become one of the most closely watched developments in Sri Lanka’s sports administration.
Following the heat of the report, Cabinet Spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa stated that there had been no official discussions by the government, the President, or the Sports Ministry about asking Silva to resign, adding that any such decision would be formally announced.
Furthermore, the SLC also maintained a stern stand that such a decision was not imminent.
However, Daily Mirror standing by its reporting, ran an exclusive again on April 27 saying that Silva was expected to resign on April 29 after high-level discussions, including a meeting with President Dissanayake to work out an exit strategy.
The report also suggested that an interim arrangement could be put in place, with former MP Eran Wickramaratne likely to take over leadership responsibilities.
Those claims have now been fully validated with Silva and the entire Executive Committee stepping down confirming the accuracy of the newspaper’s earlier reports.
The official announcement is to be made by the SLC today (29).
The resignation ends Silva’s seven-year tenure as head of Sri Lanka Cricket.
He was first elected President in February 2019 and went on to retain the position after winning multiple elections.
With Silva’s exit now official, reports indicate that Eran Wickramaratne is likely to be appointed as the interim President of Sri Lanka Cricket, as authorities move towards stabilising the board and preparing for a new phase of leadership.
