Sri Lanka Customs yesterday detected a parcel containing cocaine worth over Rs.125 million, which had arrived at the air cargo village of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) sent from Brazil.

The Customs officials of the air cargo division and the Customs Narcotic Control Unit detained a suspicious parcel, which had arrived in the country through airmail a few days ago, Customs Spokesperson Director Seevali Arukgoda said.

The officials detected about 2.5 kilograms of cocaine in the parcel, which had been sent from Brazil addressed to a local consignee.

The authorities arrested the consignee when he had come to clear the package yesterday afternoon, the sources said.

A gram of cocaine currently has a street value of Rs.50,000 and the seized narcotics are expected to be worth over Rs.125 million.

The Customs Narcotic Control Unit is conducting further inquiries. (Kurulu Koojana Kariyakarawana)

Since captured narcotics are supposed to be destroyed, how can you say it is worth Rs 125 millions. Now it should be worthless unless the original contents are released to the market and is replaced by wheat flour.

We can see lots of such news, but so far relevant authorities have never brought legal action or not declared the name of suspect.
