Customs begins digitisation drive to boost efficiency, transparency in container release

Colombo, April 30 (Daily Mirror) - The Sri Lanka Customs today launched a digitisation initiative covering several key operations, including container release, aimed at improving efficiency and transparency for the trading community.

Under the new system, processes such as container clearance, payments related to imports, and the collection of fees from cargo vessels will be handled digitally. Officials said the move will significantly reduce processing times, enabling shipping companies to complete tasks that previously took several days and involved extensive paperwork within minutes from their offices.

Speaking at the launch, Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning Anil Jayantha Fernando said the government remains committed to advancing digitisation across public services.

He said that the new system will allow all importers to access services through a single integrated platform, replacing the existing environment where container releases could be subject to individual discretion.

The Deputy Minister added that the initiative is also expected to reduce opportunities for bribery and corruption by increasing transparency and standardising procedures.
