JAELA (Daily Mirror) - A police officer attached to the Ja-Ela police fell into a canal and drowned during his attempt to arrest a suspect who had escaped custody.
Police said the suspect had escaped custody and jumped into the Ja-ela canal when the police officers were taking him to the police jeep to be produced before the court.
The suspect from Bodhirajarama Road in Jaela had been arrested for possessing heroin.
A senior police official said when the suspect in handcuffs had escaped from custody and jumped into the nearby canal, PC 99033 Krishnamurthi Piradasan (26) had given chase and jumped into the canal to arrest the suspect, but had drowned during the attempt. We should highly appreciate the valuable attempt of the police officer who tried to apprehend the accused who fled from the custody.Actually some police officers are performing the duties entrusted to them very honestly and diligently. While some officers are tarnishing the good name of the police department by soliciting the bribes and gratifications

My heart goes out to this truly great and noble Sri Lankan hero for his tragic demise. When fat bigwigs and dept chiefs take all the accolades for grand Police work, it's the simple policemen like this who break their backs doing the hard graft, occasionally losing their lives in the process. My respect and Condolences to the family! May your pains fade away with time.

One cannot bring back his life. He must be posthumously elevated in rank. Dependants paid good compensation and pension. A dedicated policeman. One in a thousand. May his soul rest in peace.
