Construction of Jaffna International Cricket Stadium temporarily halted
Colombo, Feb 24 (Daily Mirror) - Construction work on the first international cricket stadium in the Northern Province has been temporarily suspended due to the absence of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report.
The stadium, inaugurated last year with the laying of the foundation stone by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, is being built on Mandaitivu Island in Jaffna.
Chairman of the Central Environmental Authority, Professor Tilak Hewawasam, said instructions had been issued to halt ongoing construction at the Jaffna International Cricket Stadium until the required environmental clearances are obtained.
Construction of the stadium began on 1 September 2025 under the patronage of the President. At the time, he expressed confidence that the first match could be held by the end of last year and that the first international match could be staged within three years.
However, Professor Hewawasam noted that as the necessary environmental approval had not been secured from the Central Environmental Authority, work was ordered suspended a few days ago to allow for the preparation of an EIA report.
He explained that approval has now been granted to conduct the EIA, which will remain valid for a maximum of about two years. The assessment must be completed and submitted within that period. Once the report is reviewed and no issues are identified, formal approval for construction will be granted.
