The Government has appointed a committee to compensate the affected parties other than the fishing sector who had lost their livelihoods after the fire on MV X-Press Pearl freighter which had brought in one of the worst ever maritime disasters the country had witnessed.
The decision was announced at the weekly cabinet meeting at the information Department today.
There, the Cabinet spokesman said an amount of Rs. 720 million has been approved as the first installment of the interim compensation to be paid to the parties affected by maritime damage caused by the MV X-Press Pearl fire.
The proposal was made by the Justice Minister and the committee was chaired by the Fisheries Ministry Secretary and from other relevant institutions to make recommendations to compensate the fishing community.
The committee under the chairmanship of the secretary was appointed to pay compensation to the affected parties, other than the fishing sector.
