Colombo sees over 250 fire incidents so far this year

Colombo, July 27 (Daily Mirror) - A total of 258 fire incidents have been reported in Colombo and its surrounding areas during this year, the Fire Service Department has revealed.

According to the Department, 17 rescue operations were carried out in connection with these fire incidents during the same period.

Officials noted that 382 fire incidents were recorded in the Colombo District throughout last year, along with 46 rescue operations.

The Department stressed that the fact that 258 fire incidents have already been reported in the Colombo District from January to date this year is a matter that warrants serious attention.

In addition to fire-related incidents, the Fire Service Department has also responded to 13 emergency calls so far this year.

These included rescue operations related to road obstructions, fallen trees, and road traffic accidents.

The Department said investigations have identified several key factors contributing to the rise in fire incidents, including the lack of adequate fire safety measures at workplaces, failure to respond promptly to emergencies, unsafe electrical installations and practices in homes and commercial premises, and the prevailing dry weather conditions.
