Colombo,Nov. 26 (Daily Mirror) -The All-China Women’s Federation (ACWF) has donated materials valued at 1,000,000 RMB (approximately Rs. 43 million) to support the wellbeing and development of women and children in Sri Lanka. The donation includes equipment for a mother-and-baby room, a childcare centre for children of Parliament staff, and women’s hygiene products to be distributed through the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus.
The official handover ceremony took place yesterday (25) at the Parliament of Sri Lanka under the patronage of Hon. Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne. The donation was formally presented to the Speaker and Hon. Minister of Women and Child Affairs and Chairperson of the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus, Mrs. Saroja Savithri Paulraj, by H.E. Qi Zhenhong, Ambassador of China to Sri Lanka.
In his remarks, Hon. Speaker Dr. Wickramaratne said the donation reflects the longstanding friendship between Sri Lanka and China and emphasized the shared priority of promoting the wellbeing of women and children.
Mrs. Paulraj expressed gratitude for the contribution, stating that the materials will directly strengthen programmes aimed at uplifting women and children, particularly in vulnerable communities.
Ambassador Qi highlighted the historical friendship between the two nations and reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s initiatives in women’s empowerment and child welfare.
This donation follows discussions between the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus and the ACWF in 2023 and 2024, during which China pledged financial support for school uniforms and future initiatives of the Caucus.
