Chamara Sampath to be indicted before High Court for misappropriation of public funds

Colombo, Nov. 18 (Daily Mirror) - The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) informed the Colombo Chief Magistrate that the investigation conducted by the CIABOC on the alleged corruption committed by former Badulla District Parliamentarian Chamara Sampath Dassanayake to the tune of Rs. 1 million of public funds belonging to the Uva Provincial Council, has been concluded and that the Commission would take action to indict the suspect before the Colombo High Court.

Since the investigation had been completed by the Bribery Commission, Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanka S. Boderagama put off further inquiries for February 20 and ordered the Bribery Commission to inform court on the progress of the investigations. 

The Commission said that the suspect had withdrawn the funds diposited with the Badulla National Savings Bank with ulterior motives before the mature of the accounts.

Chamara Sampath Dassanayake, the former Parliamentarian for the Badulla District, was arrested by the CIABOC over financial corruption allegedly committed by Dassanayake during his tenure as a member of the Uva Provincial Council in 2016.

He was released on bail by preceding Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali in a Rs. 50,000 cash bail along with two sureties of Rs. 2 million each. In addition, an overseas travel ban was also imposed on the MP.
