Colombo, July 21 (Daily Mirror) - Cattle meant for milking are killed for meat due to lack of grasslands, Opposition MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake alleged in Parliament today.

The MP said the Wildlife Department sues catte owners claiming that the cattle eat up grass meant for wild elephants and that the situation has created serious issues in areas such as the Maduru Oya forest reserve.

He said this has resulted in Sri Lanka spending billions for the import of milk powder.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture Namal Karunaratne, who responded, said the issue should be resolved with diligence through effective dialogue with all stakeholders.

Just look at this guy's level of intelligence. How can a country ever move forward when people like this are sitting in parliament and the civil service? An even bigger mystery is who keeps voting them into office. Maybe those voters should have their heads examined too—or at the very least, brush up on the civics they were supposed to learn in school.

We cannot be self sufficient in anything. Main reason, we are citizens with leaders who are selfish and corrupt to the core. That is why we officially became bankrupt. We only have a minority who are honest, patriotic and work with a conscience and you and your earlier Politicians are no where close to that. You, Ali Baba and forty thieves get voted to power due to poor quality citizens in this Nation. India which was once a poor Nation, is today the largest tourist group for Sri Lanka with highest spending powder beating the Germans, Americans and Japanese. That is because their leaders and citizens have true sincerity towards the development of the Nation.

We have never been a dairy country so trying to supply all our milk via local producers is not feasible. Grass does not grow in SL as it does in New Zealand or Switzerland, etc. Wake up to reality. And yes, cattle farmers and others are encroaching on wildlife reserves.
