Government MPs should resign and create an opportunity for the people to elect a new government, Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith said today.

“Those who rule the country today have created a sorry state of affairs where the nation is concerned and therefore, the MPs and the Ministers who represent the government should resign from their posts if they have a backbone and pave the way for the people to elect a new administration,” Cardinal Ranjith said at a press conference.

Further, the Cardinal called for action against MPs whom he alleged are engaged in belittling the authority of judiciary.

“No one has the authority to interfere in the decision of the Supreme Court. It is clear that the judgment given on March 3, 2023 by the Supreme Court binds on the President, government and Parliament in equal measure. So, they need to follow the decision faithfully. Else they would be belittling the authority of the Supreme Court and undermine the basis of democracy,” the Cardinal said.

“It was reported that two Members of Parliament have spoken concerning the judgment given by the Supreme Court over the local government elections. The MPs have called this decision, a violation of their parliamentary privileges by Courts. This matter is to be viewed with great concern. This request by the two MPs is not in keeping with the dignity and freedom of Supreme Court and any interference with courts on the basis of parliamentary privileges is unacceptable. I appeal that action be taken against these MPs to ensure that freedom of judiciary is maintained. (Yohan Perera)

This is the most sensible and democratic thing to do now.

Chumley Pinto Monday, 13 March 2023 03:00 PM

Looks like the Cardinal wants to contest. Get lost from politics and look after your flock as the good book says. Or join Wimal and protest on the streets.

This government will never resign. We have to hope and pray an Asteroid crash on the parliament soon while the government is sitting inside.

Cardinal, Portuguese military after killing thousands of Tamils and Sinhalese, abducting and killing the Jaffna King, destroying thousands of Hindu and Buddhist temples, have left Sri Lanka many many years ago. So don’t behave like you have your backers

It is sad that Rev. Cardinal is rushing his thoughts to the public in a irrational manner. It should be understood that if all come together and agree to differ the LG elections atleast by another 6 months for the economy to start breathing. In this situation Rev. Cardinal suggesting for a snep General Election will destabilize our country further. Even a child will confirm that the Govt. Is very unpopular due to difficult decisions it had taken knowingly they are not people friendly. We need not have an election to prove it. If only a collective decision had been taken to hold the LG in Jan. 24, the country could have saved so much of man-hours that have been lost due to protests. Strikes etc. Just observe the cost involved in controlling unruly protesters. The loss of man hours of the Police n Armed forces. Even at late stage let's sign a ceasefire and totally concentrate on productive activitis. Let Rev. Cardinal in consultation with other religious leaders.

I will pray for my Country actually for it to recover. We never support one another but work for our agendas. We threw one guy out, the one who came in is doing somewhat of a good job. Why cant we support him and then fight at the next election in 2024. Why cant we Lankans fathom that

    Buddhist Monday, 13 March 2023 03:34 PM

Cardinal should lead a country-wide satyagraha against the government.

    Gamini Monday, 13 March 2023 03:41 PM

How about him resigning first? After all he has been in the same role for over twelve years. Did he not lend support to the Rajapakse's at the last elections which in turn led to the very sorry state of affairs affairs in the country? So given the role he played, what responsibility does he take for this mess? His ability to judge is not much to talk about is it? He supported the persons now suggested as needing to be investigated in relation to the Easter day carnage. Perhaps it is time to stop playing politics and stick to matters of the church, if he is not able to walk away and provide an opportunity for a younger more capable person. Perhaps the trappings and power of office are too much to relinquish. Is he still on the Rajapakse's side?

Sri Lankan Monday, 13 March 2023 04:41 PM

This is the most appropriate course of action to be adopted. Whoever to lead the country to make the necessary changes, establish measures against corruption and restore normalcy should hold a clear mandate from the people. All religious leaders should adequately influence to make this happen soon.

    Chris Monday, 13 March 2023 04:49 PM

The most politicised Catholic clergyman ever. We all know how he ran behind the Rajapakse family. He was promoting GR at the last elections. Best you attend to the matters of the church.

Bernard Jayatilake Monday, 13 March 2023 04:56 PM

Will they commit suicide by holding an election now, let alone LG elections, as they purposely delay the election citing various reasons as they are banking on the IMF bailout package of USD 2.9 million which, they think, will deliver them and until then they will go to the extreme of even challenging the Supreme Court judgement.

    Fred Monday, 13 March 2023 04:57 PM

Why not comment on the issues raised by the Cardinal without casting personal invective. That's what happens in civilized communities abroad of which SL is trying to become a part of.

Ranjith Perera Monday, 13 March 2023 04:59 PM

One must realize that RW came into power by piggyback and now acting against the mandate given to GR. He and government cannot graft totally opposing policies on the mandate given to GR unless they seek fresh mandate from masses. If the government disagrees with Supreme Court decision, they must complain it to the court instead calling it under purview of parliamentary privileges by doing that they belittle judiciary independence and interfere into court prerogatives. Politicians must not be selective in accepting and rejecting court verdicts . In the constitutional form of government powers of adjudication of disputes in our land is vested in the judiciary.

ROSH samarathunga Monday, 13 March 2023 05:35 PM

Unelected president who loved tobe master debated on top of the parliament to hold the elections.

    Musthaq Monday, 13 March 2023 05:44 PM

Will elections of any forms solve the current economic crisis? No I dont think. Also very unfortunately many hard working individuals will have to pay the taxes to get out of this current menace. I hope will have to let the IMF deal and debt resructruing to finish to go for any kind of election otherwise country will run into an anarchy if NPP comes to power at this juncture, will support NPP at the next election once the cuntry is stable I dont think anyone will like to go for a 'Polim period' now due to uncertainity

    sam Monday, 13 March 2023 07:42 PM

Equally important is a presidential. Have both on the same day.

    Pantha Monday, 13 March 2023 11:48 PM

I totally agree with your comment. Sadly Ranil is a puppet of Rajapakses. Furthermore Basil decides every thing. We all are stupid. We don't have a proper opportution party to defend us. Where do we go next.

sacre blieu Tuesday, 14 March 2023 09:34 AM

will we ever see democracy again. Our politics should take a paradigm shift from its insincere direction and even insult of the constitution. Nothing is ever done in good faith anymore.

Karalasingam Sivalingam Tuesday, 14 March 2023 01:24 PM

Will the change of government be better than the incumbent, which party would get a comfortable majority to manage a government, will JVP and SJB support each other to implement common agendas in regard to corruption, reprimanding the corrupt and who committed heneous crimes and evaded arrests or punishments or whether each other would try to topple the governing one, can the His Highness forsee these salient facts.

    Rob Tuesday, 14 March 2023 02:50 PM

If this nation had a tough judicial system that follows the right path without any kind of favours this nation would have been like Hong Kong Singapore Malaysia Thailand etc...sadly the law
