President Ranil Wickremesinghe's proposal to transform the historic city of Kandy into a well-planned, organized and developed city has received unanimous approval from the Cabinet of Ministers, President's Media Division said.

The government would take measures to accelerate the Central Expressway project that will connect Kandy with Katugastota.

A special committee will be established, consisting of the Urban Development Authority, the Kandy District Development Committee, parliamentarians and ministers representing the district, and experts in the field of city planning.

This committee will prepare a comprehensive development plan for the Katugastota, Kandy and Kundasale areas, with a particular focus on improving infrastructure, amenities, and services.

To ensure that the project remains on track, the committee will meet every two months to review progress and make necessary adjustments.

The Cabinet meeting, where the proposal was approved, was held at the President's Official Residence in Kandy, following the Janaraja Perahara (Procession) which paraded through the streets of Kandy on the previous night (19).

Seems like everything coming from the man rejected by 98% of voters. A cuckoo in the nest. We have no money, there will be no development....just a back of an envelope plan for a day's headline.

Still planning doesnt need money. And the money shall be available when real work starts. Rejection is irrelevant he has the mandate of the parliament which is enabled by ppl.

Then we don't have money to print ballot papers

We are not interested in any developments or economic recovery! All we want is elections. (Like most people wanted national security in 2019 and almost lost their food security)

I hope the special committee will concentrate on "the development" creating opportunites for businesses which in turn add to the productivity creating jobs, in the medium and long term.

Kandy is a very neglected city. On a recent visit to the city from overseas i found that the roads were full of potholes that I could hardly take a walk around the Kandy Lake. It was so congested that I found it so difficult to walk without bumping onto someone. The traffic was parked all over the place and there was hardly any room for pedestrians to walk. There's hardly been any development since I left Kandy 30 years ago. Kandy being the hill capital of Sri Lanka looks like a ghost town and definitely needs a facelift since the British left the country in 1948.

It is a complete new method. Develop Kandy and thereafter make money due to the development and thereafter have the election. Seems like he is buttering the Mahanayakes
