Cabinet approves four new high courts in Colombo 7

Colombo, Oct. 28 (Daily Mirror) - The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the establishment of four new high court premises in Colombo 7 with immediate effect. This move aims to support the Ministry of Justice and National Integration in executing its activities under the Anti-Corruption National Action Plan (2025–2029).

The decision follows a proposal by the Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Governments. He informed the Cabinet that the Ministry would transfer several government-owned buildings to the Ministry of Justice to establish the new high courts.

The buildings designated for the new courts are located at No. B 88, Gregory Road, Colombo 07; No. C 76, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 07; No. B 108, Wijerama Road, Colombo 07; and No. B 12, Stanmore Crescent, Colombo 07.

Please establish a new high court in Jaffna to deal with the long waiting of cases. The house and property cases are long overdrawn with postponement of cases. This is due to the owners returning and claiming their lawfully owning properties. The owners are spending exorbitant amount of time, money and travels to attend to these cases.

This is a good decision to have speedy disposal of the cases pending before the HC when loads of new cases are also filed. Once the backlog is cleared slowly the HC Judges cadre can be reduced. if the Judges have no work

Why couldn't the Minister of Justice find a place where there is adequate parking for litigants, lawyers and judges? Such a silly idea to locate a court house in the midst of judges' and diplomats' residences. There are newly built government buildings with more than enough space, not properly utilized in and around Colombo. For example, at the Arcade Independence Square, close to bus routes and beneficial to litigants. It is just another foolish JVP idea done with the intent of pleasing their supporters, 'a court house established in MR's former residence;!. Before long it will become thoroughly depreciated and the next government will spend a few more millions, refurbish it and use it as a high profile government office!

Great move. This will speed up the judicial process of previous regimes’ corruption cases while making use of available government buildings that were being misused by them to provide free housing to their leaders.

These areas are extremely residential areas with a calm and serene atmosphere. Is this a wise decision? There are any amount of vacant buildings waiting to be utilized in more suitable locations.
