Cabinet approves MoU with Finland to establish political consultation mechanism

Colombo, Feb. 3 (Daily Mirror) - The Cabinet has approved a proposal to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Sri Lanka and Finland to establish a formal political consultation mechanism, Cabinet spokesman and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.

Addressing the media, Minister Jayatissa said the proposal was submitted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism. He noted that Sri Lanka and Finland established official diplomatic relations in 1954, with 2026 marking the 72nd anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Over the decades, bilateral relations have expanded into an active partnership, strengthened through political, economic, socio-cultural, educational, environmental and people-to-people engagement, he said.

The proposed MoU aims to further promote and strengthen cooperation in the political, economic, educational, environmental, consular and cultural sectors, while also facilitating the exchange of views on regional and multilateral issues of mutual interest.

The agreement is expected to provide a structured framework for regular dialogue and enhanced collaboration between Sri Lanka and Finland, officials said.
