Cabinet approval permits to amend Gazette announcing Kompanyaveediya in three languages

Cabinet approval and permission was granted to publish a Gazette notification mentioning the 'Kompanna Veediya' Grama Niladhari (GN) division in all three languages.

The decision was announced during the weekly meeting to inform Cabinet decisions held at the Government Information Department this morning.

Earlier, the Grama Niladhari division was announced as "කොම්පඤ්ඤ වීදිය" in Sinhala Language, "Slave Island" in English and "கொம்பனித்தெரு" in Tamil.

Therefore, the Cabinet decision was taken to pronounce the GN division as Kompanna Veediya in the three languages.

The Cabinet of ministers approved issuing a new Gazette notification while amending the previous Gazette notification (743/5), which was issued on December 1, 1992.

The proposal in this regard was made by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardana in the capacity of the Minister of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government.

Earlier, to coincide with the 75th anniversary of Independence Day, the Prime Minister informed the officials that he had informed them that the English name "Slave Island" should be changed to "Kompannavidiya" immediately.

The Postmaster General and the Municipal Council Commissioner have also been informed in this regard.

Although the name Slave Island was used during the colonial period, the name 'Kompanna Veediya' was used in Sinhala and Tamil. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
