CPSL condemns US arms sales to Taiwan province, affirms One China policy

Colombo, Jan. 20 (Daily Mirror) - The Communist Party of Sri Lanka (CPSL) strongly condemns the recent announcement by the United States of an unprecedented US$ 11.1 billion arms sale to China’s Taiwan province. This reckless escalation – encompassing advanced rocket systems, artillery, missiles, loitering munitions and associated equipment – constitutes a grave interference in China’s internal affairs and a direct provocation against peace and stability in Asia.

In a statement signed by its General Secretary Dr. G. Weerasinghe , the party said the   Taiwan question is not an international dispute but a legacy of imperialist intervention in China’s civil war and the broader tragedy of colonialism in Asia. History and international law have long settled Taiwan’s status as an inalienable part of China. United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 affirmed the Government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) as the sole legitimate representative of China.

The arming of Taiwan province dangerously raises the risk of confrontation and places people across both sides of the Taiwan Straits on a powder keg. Such actions violate the One China principle and the relevant China–US joint communiqués, and they threaten to draw the region into unnecessary conflict. The right of the Chinese people to resolve their own national question, free from foreign interference, must be respected.

We further recall that the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka has historically upheld the One China policy. In the Joint Statement with the PRC, signed in January 2025, Sri Lanka recognized Taiwan as an inalienable part of China, firmly supported all efforts to achieve national reunification, and opposed ‘Taiwan independence’ in any form.

The CPSL calls upon the Government of Sri Lanka to steadfastly uphold this principled position, in defense of international law, regional peace, and the sovereign equality of nations. We urge progressive and peace-loving forces worldwide to oppose militarization by foreign powers and stand in solidarity with the Chinese people’s just struggle for national reunification.
